Elena’s journey as a Restaurant Manager at Novotel

Being a Restaurant Manager is more than overseeing operations; it’s about creating memorable experiences, leading teams with empathy, and constantly learning.

Elena Popescu’s journey at Novotel & ibis Styles Madrid City Las Ventas demonstrates how dedication, passion, and a love for hospitality can transform a career. Her story is a testament to the opportunities available for those ready to grow, lead, and inspire in the world of hospitality.

How did you start your career in hospitality?

"I started working in hospitality, thinking it was temporary while I studied philosophy. I began as a waitress in Romania, gaining experience in different restaurants and hotels. Over time, I discovered my passion for the sector.

I loved the interaction with people, the fast pace, and the constant learning. Hospitality became more than a job; it became a way of life."

What motivated you to move to Spain and join Accor?

"In 2004, I moved to Spain and continued working in restaurants. Two years later, I took a step further by joining Novotel & ibis Styles Madrid City Las Ventas.

I wanted to develop my career in hospitality and seize the opportunity to grow within a professional and supportive environment."

How did your role evolve at Novotel & ibis Styles Madrid City Las Ventas?

"I started as a Welcomer in the restaurant, and in 2009, I was promoted to 2nd Maître D’Hotel. In 2013, I became a Restaurant Manager.

Each stage allowed me to understand both operational and strategic aspects of the business, and inspired me to pursue further training to broaden my management perspective."

How has additional training supported your role as a Restaurant Manager?

"In 2019, I completed a Master's in Restaurant Management and Hotel F&B, which strengthened my management skills and gave me a more global vision of running a restaurant.

This knowledge helps me make informed decisions, lead my team, and ensure excellent service every day."

What does a typical day look like for you?

"My daily role includes supporting the team to deliver excellent customer service, managing stock and orders, and implementing Accor’s sustainability initiatives, such as fighting food waste.

It’s a balance of operational work, leadership, and planning, all while ensuring our guests feel welcomed and cared for."

What achievements are you most proud of?

"While I am proud of every promotion, which represents dedication and hard work, I am especially proud to be part of a passionate professional team. We work with enthusiasm, knowing that every detail makes a difference for our guests."

What does being a Heartist® mean to you?

"Being a Heartist® means loving what you do and putting your heart into every moment. It’s about creating unforgettable memories for guests, a special dinner, a dream trip, an important celebration, and helping them feel at home even when they’re far away from home."

What advice would you give to new starters in hospitality?

"Working in the hospitality industry helps you grow as a person. You learn to listen, adapt, find solutions with a smile, and connect with people.

It’s demanding and sometimes challenging, but it’s also dynamic, human, and full of opportunities for those passionate about their work. Developing a service attitude will support you both inside and outside of work."
