Job Description

The Shift Building Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of the hotel’s building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical equipment. This role ensures all systems function optimally, resolves issues promptly, and reports major concerns to supervisory staff.

What you will be doing

Operations & Maintenance

  • Conduct daily inspections and walkthroughs of all facilities.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and other systems.
  • Manage boiler, chill water, generator, wastewater treatment, water transfer, and pool room plants.
  • Track and log gas, water, and hydro readings; maintain accurate records of maintenance work.
  • Perform routine, urgent, and emergency inspections and repairs.
  • Use O&M manuals and drawings for troubleshooting and safe operations.

 

Inventory & System Management

  • Order and maintain inventory of parts and equipment.
  • Monitor and operate building automation systems (BAS) to optimize performance and manage alarms.
  • Utilize the Work Order system to schedule, track, and report maintenance tasks.
  • Collaborate with contractors, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure smooth building operations.

 

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, standards, and hotel policies.
  • Respond to fire alarms and after-hours emergencies in coordination with Security.
  • Maintain building architectural finishes, doors, windows, and magnetic keying systems.
  • Lead toolbox talks and ensure team members follow safety procedures.

 

Guest & Team Support

  • Provide exceptional service to guests and colleagues.
  • Support general housekeeping of plant areas.
  • Perform additional tasks as required to maintain overall building operations and standards.

 

 


Qualifications

Qualifications & Skills

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Relevant trade certification Required (Electrical, Plumbing, 3rd Class Power Engineer, Waste Water Treatment, etc.).

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years in a Shift Building Operator or similar role, preferably in a luxury hotel environment.
  • Proven experience operating and maintaining HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and other building systems.
  • Experience using work order management systems and building automation systems (BAS).
  • Track record of responding effectively to urgent and emergency building system issues.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical knowledge of building systems and equipment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow and understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and compliance requirements, including lockout/tagout, fall arrest, confined space, WHMIS, and CPR/first aid.
  • Skilled in the safe use of hand and power tools standard in HVAC, electrical, and mechanical maintenance trades.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and self-starter attitude.
  • Ability to document work clearly and submit all records promptly.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff.

Schedules:  Irregular hours including evenings, weekends and public holidays apply to this position
