We invite you to join the world of luxury hospitality at Fairmont Southampton as our new Shift Building Operator- Building Engineer (Plumber). Reporting to the Director, Engineering & Facility Operations, the Shift Building Operator- Building Engineer (Plumber) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of the hotel’s plumbing systems and associated building infrastructure.
This role supports overall building operations by ensuring plumbing systems including water supply, drainage, wastewater, and related mechanical equipment function optimally, while also assisting with general building systems as required. The position resolves issues promptly, supports preventative maintenance programs, and escalates major concerns to supervisory staff.
What you will be doing:
Operations & Maintenance
- Conduct daily inspections and walkthroughs of plumbing systems and general facilities.
- Install, maintain, and repair water supply lines, drainage systems, fixtures, and plumbing equipment.
- Support operation and maintenance of broader building systems.
- Maintain and service pumps, valves, water heaters, filtration systems, and wastewater infrastructure.
- Perform preventative maintenance to minimize downtime and system failures.
- Diagnose faults and complete routine, urgent, and emergency repairs efficiently.
- Track and log water usage, system performance, and maintenance activities.
- Utilize O&M manuals, schematics, and technical drawings for safe troubleshooting and repair.
Inventory & System Management
- Order and maintain inventory of plumbing parts, materials, tools, and equipment.
- Use the Work Order system to schedule, track, and report maintenance activities.
- Monitor building systems, including water systems on the Building Automation Systems (BAS), to optimize performance and identify issues.
- Identify opportunities for water conservation and operational efficiencies.
- Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, and internal departments to ensure seamless operations.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable plumbing codes, safety standards, and hotel policies.
- Respond to leaks, blockages, flooding, and after-hours emergencies in coordination with Engineering and Security teams.
- Adhere to safety procedures including lockout/tagout, confined space entry, and safe equipment operation.
- Participate in toolbox talks and promote a strong safety culture.
- Maintain plumbing infrastructure, plant rooms, and associated areas in a safe and compliant condition.
Guest & Team Support
- Deliver exceptional service to guests and internal teams by resolving maintenance issues promptly.
- Support the operational functionality of kitchens, laundry, guestrooms, and public areas.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of plant rooms and workspaces.
- Collaborate with the Engineering team to uphold hotel standards and service excellence.
- Perform additional tasks as required to support the overall operation of the property.

Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a plumbing or building operator role, preferably within a hotel, resort, or commercial environment.
- Proven experience installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems and fixtures.
- Exposure to broader building systems (HVAC, mechanical, electrical) is an asset.
- Experience using work order management systems and responding to emergency maintenance situations.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Plumbing Certification / Trade Qualification required.
- Additional certifications (e.g., HVAC, Power Engineering, Water Treatment) are an benefit.
Competencies, Knowledge & Skills
- Strong technical knowledge of plumbing systems, piping, fixtures, and equipment.
- General knowledge of building systems including HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and compliance requirements (lockout/tagout, confined space, WHMIS, CPR/first aid).
- Skilled in the safe use of plumbing tools, equipment, and materials.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Ability to mentor and support junior team members.

- Physically capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling maintenance equipment and materials safely.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
- Must be able to work safely in a fast-paced hospitality environment while maintaining high service standards.
