Job Description

The Regional Director of Sustainability will lead and oversee all environmental initiatives for both the Fairmont Banff Springs and The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.  In addition this position will support all Canadian Western Mountain properties as it pertains to Carbon reduction strategies, ESG scorecard reporting and auditing of same. 

Leading the region in environmental stewardship is the Chateau Lake Louise, where this position will be based. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is a world class heritage destination located within Banff National Park.  Continuing the leadership role in environmental stewardship, the hotel has implemented the first environmental effects monitoring program, the hotel ties operational goals and values directly to ensuring the natural environment in which the hotel is located remains unchanged for future generations. 

We are searching for a dynamic leader who has proven excellence in the environmental industry, to oversee the continued implementation of these monitoring systems at each hotel.  Having extensive project management experience and a minimum of two years experience in the environmental industry, you will liaise with municipal, provincial and federal governments to ensure operations remain compliant while providing an exceptional guest experience. 

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the region’s environmental stewardship programs (e.g. energy management, solid waste management, water and waste water management, wildlife management, dark sky management, landscape chemical use management, and environmental education)
  • Participate and take a leading role with Banff and Lake Louise’s sustainability committee to integrate environmental programs within all hotel operating departments.
  • Promote awareness on environmental decisions and report on the region’s environmental programs and energy performance to key stakeholders both within and outside the organization as required/requested.
  • Lead periodic environmental reporting for the region including management of all facility certifications, standards and benchmarking as requested.
  • Carbon Reduction:
    • Assist the RDOE in creating, implementing and communicating the CWMR regions’ carbon reduction plan
    • Inputting GAIA for BSH/CLL.  Support and guide GAIA inputting for all CWMR properties.
    • Assist CWMR properties as a resource.
  • Hotel lead on environmental audits for CWMR (5 properties) as requested by Accor/ownership.   
  • Assist RDOE in creating ESG scorecards for all Fairmont CWMR properties (including providing data for non-engineering elements)
  • Main resource for all CWMR properties as it pertains to corporate/3rd party audits (i.e. Green Key Ratings, SUP audits)
  • Liaise with Parks Canada, Provincial Governments and Municipal Governments to meet all regulatory requirements and capitalize on related programs, incentives and subsidies.
  • Assist in the evaluation and implementation of energy, water and waste demand reduction programs.
  • Work with S&M team to ensure sustainability practices (including carbon reduction) and initiatives are communicated as needed (client site visits, website info, Heartist updates)
  • With F&B senior leadership, oversee food waste program implementation and tracking.
  • Support all properties with ESG reporting as required.  Input for BSH/CLL as required.

For the Chateau Lake Louise specifically;

  • Oversee the continued implementation of the Environmental Management System for the property aligning with the objectives of Parks Canada and company stewardship program.
  • Oversee the ongoing implementation of the hotel’s ongoing Heritage and Environmental Education program.
  • Oversee the continued implementation of the No Net Negative Environmental Effects Monitoring Framework, including submission of annual reporting requirements

Qualifications

  • Minimum of undergraduate degree in environmental sciences or related area with a sustainability focus
  • Environmental professional with minimum two years experience
  • Proven ability to effectively lead, motivate and develop a team of colleagues and external professionals to achieve shared goals
  • Highly motivated, organized, goal and results oriented individual who thrives under pressure
  • Excellent organizational, written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of terrestrial, biological and aquatic ecosystems
  • Experience in regulatory and compliance issues at the provincial and federal levels
  • Knowledge and experience working with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, including the preparation and critiquing of screening level documents
