Job Description

  • Assisting the Chief Engineer: Support the Chief Engineer in managing the engineering department’s daily activities, staff, and maintenance schedule.
  • Supervision and Training: Oversee a team of engineers and technicians, providing direction, support, and training to ensure high-quality performance.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Ensure the execution of regular preventive maintenance programs for the hotel’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Emergency Repairs: Respond promptly to maintenance emergencies, ensuring issues are resolved quickly and efficiently to minimize guest inconvenience.
  • Budget and Cost Control: Assist in preparing and managing the department’s budget, ensuring that all tasks are completed within financial constraints.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure all engineering work complies with safety standards, local regulations, and hotel policies. Maintain a clean, safe, and hazard-free work environment.
  • Energy Management: Monitor and optimize energy consumption across the hotel’s operations, implementing energy-saving initiatives.
  • Guest Services: Ensure that guest requests related to engineering (such as room repairs or adjustments) are completed efficiently and to the highest standards.
  • Inventory Management: Maintain an inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies, ensuring that all are in good working order and available when needed.
  • Communication and Coordination: Liaise with other departments to ensure smooth operations and address any cross-departmental maintenance issues.
  • Reports and Documentation: Prepare and maintain maintenance records, work orders, and reports for operational performance reviews.

Qualifications

Educational Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related technical field.
    • Preferred: A degree in mechanical, electrical, civil, or industrial engineering.
    • Alternative: Relevant technical certifications, such as an engineering diploma or HVAC certification, can be considered.

Professional Experience:

  1. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in engineering or maintenance within the hospitality industry or a similar field.

    • Prior experience in a hotel or large commercial property is highly valued.
    • At least 2 years of supervisory experience in a technical or engineering role, including managing a team.
  2. Experience with building systems:

    • In-depth knowledge of hotel-specific systems, including HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), electrical, plumbing, fire safety, elevators, and general maintenance.

Technical Skills:

  1. Knowledge of Hotel Engineering Systems:
    • Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems (MEP).
    • Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and perform maintenance on these systems.
  2. Preventive Maintenance Programs:
    • Experience in developing and managing preventive maintenance schedules for hotel infrastructure.
  3. Energy Management:
    • Ability to monitor and optimize energy consumption.
    • Knowledge of energy-saving practices and systems for hotels.

Certifications (Preferred but not always required):

  1. HVAC Certification or other relevant mechanical/electrical certifications.
  2. Building Systems Certifications (e.g., ASHRAE, LEED, or similar).
  3. Safety Certifications such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) or other workplace safety training.

Key Skills:

  1. Leadership and Team Management:
    • Ability to supervise and motivate a team of engineers and technicians.
    • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff and management.
  2. Problem Solving and Troubleshooting:
    • Ability to quickly diagnose and resolve technical issues, minimizing disruption to hotel operations.
  3. Budgeting and Financial Management:
    • Experience managing budgets for the engineering department and controlling costs effectively.
  4. Communication:
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in English (additional languages are a plus).
    • Ability to report on maintenance activities and provide clear instructions to team members.
  5. Project Management:
    • Ability to oversee engineering projects such as refurbishments, installations, or upgrades.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  1. Physical Stamina:
    • Ability to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in physically demanding environments.
  2. Flexibility:
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as hotel operations require.
  3. Attention to Detail:
    • Must maintain high standards of safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency.
