Job Description

Title: Assistant Chief Engineer  

Reports To: Chief Engineer 

Supervises: Engineer staff 

General Purpose: Responsible for overseeing all functions of the Engineering department in the absence of the Chief Engineer. The Assistant Chief Engineer will oversee engineering operations for interior/exterior facilities including electrical, refrigeration, plumbing, heating/cooling, structural, ground care and parking areas. Manage other engineering work necessary to maintain the property in an optimum and efficient condition to ensure the safety and comfort of guests and employees. 

Specific Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain complete knowledge of all hotel features/services, hours of operation, daily house count and expected arrivals/departures, etc. to ensure work orders are scheduled around critical times; assist in monthly department inventories.  

  • Lead all daily line-ups. Develop and delegate daily work plan for preventive and unscheduled maintenance to all engineering staff; hold staff accountable for timely completion of work tickets.  

  • Attend necessary meetings and functions to show support and provide input towards the success of the hotel.  

  • Review daily log books and manage all day-to-day activities ensuring all preventive and unscheduled maintenance is completed in a timely fashion with attention to detail.  

  • Assist with interview, selection and training of new staff members.  

  • Promote open-door policy among staff members; identify and resolve performance problems not in line with company standards; consistently apply hotel standards/procedures in evaluation and discipline of staff.  

  • Achieve objectives through direction and delegation.  

  • Assist in developing a list of departmental goals and objectives; plan for the execution of hotel projects.  

  • Oversee preventative maintenance program for guest rooms and public areas in order to achieve Langham standards.  

  • Oversee maintenance of the central plant/hotel; maintain HVAC systems, Kitchen facilities, refrigeration systems, laundry facilities, electrical systems, life-safety systems, and sewage systems; maintain the energy management system, including continuous improvement.  

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Assist the Chief Engineer in managing the inspection of all building systems and life-safety systems to insure minimum downtime, expense and discomfort to our guests.  

  • Provide oversight and supervision of all carpentry projects, painting and decorating, maintain plumbing systems, grounds and landscaping.  

  • Ensure employees maintain safe conditions and procedures in work areas and other associated areas.  

  • Practice emergency procedures in compliance with hotel/company standards; react and assist in hotel emergency situations as needed.  

  • Set standards for the department in image, appearance and grooming; properly represent the company to outside vendors/organizations based on established uniform standards; return business telephone calls the same day.  

  • Establish, direct and maintain the appropriate organizational climate to meet the needs of the hotel's employees and guests.  

  • Additional duties not listed above may be requested by supervisor.  

 

 


Qualifications

Qualifications: 

  • Experience as a Building Engineer with experience directing contractors, vendors, and managing engineering staff. Basic computing skills necessary to operate building automation systems. Must have familiarity with OSHA and Life Safety Codes.  

  • Knowledge of all technical aspects of engineering/maintenance ( i.e. mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC).  

  • Ability to motivate and lead staff members to achieve a common goal.  

  • Ability to maintain hotel standards, policies and procedures with staff.  

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics.  

  • Ability to communicate well in written and spoken English.  

  • Ability to think clearly under high pressure or emergency situations.  

  • Ability to promote positive work relationships among all hotel staff.  

  • Ability to ascertain staff training needs and provide such training.  

  • Ability to organize, direct, plan and control all engineering activities.  

  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair all mechanical, electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems in a timely manner.  

  • Ability to effectively maintain all equipment so less than 20% of all engineering staff time is spent on reactive maintenance.  

Education/Formal Training: 

  • High school diploma, or equivalent education 

Experience: 

  • At least two years working in maintenance/engineering. 

Physical requirements: 

  • Stand/walk for up to 8 hours; sit; reach; grasp; walk; climb; kneel; squat/bend; push/pull. 

  • Lift/carry up to 75 lbs.
