Mercure Melbourne La Trobe Street is a brand new 4-star hotel joining the Accor network. Situated at 488 La Trobe Street in the heart of West Melbourne, the hotel is ideally located near key Melbourne landmarks including Flagstaff Gardens, Queen Victoria Market, Docklands, and Marvel Stadium.

This exciting new property will deliver a unique guest experience defined by spacious design, natural light, and modern convenience. We now have an outstanding opportunity for a strategic, meticulous, and commercially astute finance professional to establish the financial framework of this hotel through its critical pre-opening phase and successful launch as Financial Controller.


Job Description

As Financial Controller, you will be instrumental in building and shaping the financial infrastructure of Mercure Melbourne La Trobe Street from the ground up. This pivotal pre-opening role requires a highly skilled finance professional with strong financial and commercial acumen to ensure the hotel achieves maximum profitability, maintains stringent financial controls, and ensures full compliance from day one. You will act as a key business partner to the General Manager and leadership team, providing critical financial insights to drive operational excellence and achieve the hotel’s financial objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Opening Financial Leadership: Establish, implement, and lead all financial systems, policies, and internal controls crucial for the hotel's successful launch.
  • Strategic Financial Management: Partner with the General Manager and Owners to drive profitability, develop comprehensive budgets, forecasts, and provide insightful financial analysis to guide business decisions.
  • Financial Control & Reporting: Ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and compliance of all financial reporting (weekly, monthly, annual) for Accor, Owners, and statutory bodies, overseeing general accounting functions.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Uphold stringent internal controls and ensure full adherence to Accor's financial policies, local legislation, and statutory requirements, mitigating financial risks.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Foster strong relationships with internal teams, owners, and external partners (auditors, banks, government agencies) for seamless financial operations and compliance.

Qualifications

To thrive in this exciting pre-opening opportunity, you will bring an entrepreneurial spirit, exceptional attention to detail, and a deep understanding of hotel operations and financial management. You are a strategic thinker with proven commercial acumen and a meticulous approach to compliance and control.

You will also have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, or Commerce, with CA or CPA qualification preferred.
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience in a similar role within the hotel industry, ideally including a pre-opening.
  • Thorough knowledge and practical experience with hotel-specific financial systems (e.g., SUN, Opera, Micros, Purchase Plus) and general accounting software.
  • Expertise in Australian state and federal legislation for tax, superannuation, long service leave, and National Employment Standards.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to translate complex financial data into meaningful strategic information and actionable insights.
  • Strong personal integrity, and the ability to manage a large volume of workload to meet tight deadlines.
  • Full Australian working rights.
