Director of Engineering

What you will be doing:

As Director of Engineering, you’ll be a key member of the Executive Committee, overseeing all engineering operations, strategic capital projects, and preventive maintenance across the property. You will safeguard our building’s legacy while advancing sustainability, safety, and service excellence.

Strategic & Capital Planning

  • Lead development and execution of long-term engineering strategy and 5-year capital plan
  • Oversee major renovations, asset upgrades, and infrastructure improvement projects
  • Identify and implement energy-efficient and ROI-driven solutions aligned with sustainability goals

Team Leadership & Culture

  • Recruit, coach, and develop a high-performing, engaged Engineering team
  • Foster an inclusive, accountable, and safety-driven work environment
  • Leverage colleague engagement insights to continuously improve culture and retention

Operational Excellence

  • Oversee operation and maintenance of all building systems: HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and life safety
  • Implement and refine the preventive maintenance program across all guest and public areas
  • Ensure consistent compliance with all safety, environmental, fire, and building regulations

Guest Experience Enhancement

  • Champion engineering initiatives that directly support guest satisfaction and comfort
  • Proactively resolve guest concerns efficiently with empathy and accountability
  • Partner with Guest Experience teams to elevate TrustYou scores and service delivery

Budgeting & Financial Stewardship

  • Prepare and manage annual engineering budgets (Property Operations, Maintenance & Energy Costs or POMEC)
  • Conduct forecasting, ROI analysis, and cost-control initiatives
  • Manage third-party vendor contracts for optimal value and quality

Sustainability & Compliance

  • Chair the hotel’s Planet 21 Sustainability Committee
  • Monitor utility consumption and implement environmentally responsible practices
  • Ensure emergency preparedness, crisis response, and adherence to all local and federal codes

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as a proactive liaison with internal departments, ownership representatives, and corporate stakeholders
  • Represent Engineering on hotel committees, audits, and executive planning meetings
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with contractors and regulatory authorities

Qualifications

To be successful in this role we ask that you have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Engineering or related discipline
  • Level 4 Power Engineer Certificate (required); 2nd Class Stationary Engineer (preferred)
  • Minimum 5 years’ leadership experience in engineering within a luxury hotel or complex facility
  • Proven expertise in building systems: HVAC, MEP, life safety, and energy management
  • Deep understanding of BC Occupational Health & Safety and building/fire codes
  • Experience managing preventive maintenance programs and capital projects
  • Budget management expertise, with a strong focus on ROI and cost-effectiveness
  • Proficiency with technical software (AutoCAD preferred), blueprints, and project management tools
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, guest-centric environment

Physical Aspects of Position (include but are not limited to): 

  • Regular walking, standing, kneeling, and lifting (up to 30 lbs)
  • Occasional work on ladders, stairs, ramps, scaffolding, and confined spaces
