Job Description

The Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing the Maintenance and Engineering functions, ensuring the safety, comfort, and satisfaction of guests while safeguarding the owner’s investment. This role leads the daily operations of the Engineering Team, ensuring that all maintenance tasks and objectives are executed efficiently to maintain the property and hotel operations at peak performance. 

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide a professional, advisory and support service to the Director of Engineering to assist in meeting the strategic goals of The Property. 
  • Plan and carry out preventative maintenance throughout the Hotel to ensure standards are maintained for a positive guest experience.  
  • Manage and control the Maintenance Request System and regularly complete analysis on the System regarding frequent guest or Property issues, timeliness of Requests/Jobs and suggest and implement any improvements based on analysis. 
  • Delegate the completion of general repairs and maintenance to the property within Engineering team or contractors as required.  
  • Champion resource management improvements and conservation.  
  • Be responsible for the testing of fire alarms, emergency lighting etc. on a routine basis as required by local Council and Fire Service.  
  • Liaise with the Director of Engineering and Director of Finance regarding use of contractors within the Hotel, controlling expenditure and ensuring work is to the standard required by the company and manufacturer specifications.  
  • Ensure the external areas of the hotel are neat and tidy and maintained in line with company brand standards.  
  • Research, recommend and liaise with the Director of Engineering regarding procedures to improve the overall efficiency of the department.  
  • Complete project work and prepare reports as requested by the Executive Committee.  
  • Ensure all team members are competent in the safe and effective use of equipment and chemicals in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.  
  • Prepare monthly maintenance reports, commenting on key performance indicators and action taken to keep on target.  
  • Maintain contractor records including SWMS and Public Liability insurance, ensure work permits are obtained before commencement, especially when working at heights or within confined spaces.  
  • Induct contractors to ensure adherence to Mondrian Gold Coast policy’s and on-site safety measures.  

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Chief Engineer/Facilities Manager or similar role.
  • Strong technical knowledge of building systems (Electrical, HVAC, Mechanical etc).
  • Knowledge of health & safety practices and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Australian Standards related to facilities management.
  • Body/Owners Corporation Experience.
  • Understanding of budgeting and performance management.
  • Excellent planning and leadership abilities.
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skillset.
  • Previous experience in pre-opening a hotel is advantageous.
  • Trade qualification preferred but not essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must have Full Australian Working Rights.
